Toothprints® Dental ID for Children
Colorado Springs, CO
As a parent, you spend much time worrying about the safety of your child. You do everything you can to keep them safe. One of a parent’s greatest fears is for their child to get lost, or abducted. While there are measures in place to aid in finding missing children (such as AMBER alerts), the child may still need to be identified. At Todd Rogers Dental, our team offers a way to safeguard your child if they get lost – Toothprints® Dental ID.
What is Toothprints Dental ID?
Fingerprints are not the only attribute that is unique to every person. Dental imprints are just as unique. Not even identical twins have the same bite imprint. Because of this, dental impressions serve as a highly effective means of identifying an individual.
Toothprints Dental ID was originally developed by a pediatric dentist. He invented it as a way to protect his child, as well as many of his young patients. It involves the use of an arch-shaped thermoplastic wafer that records your child’s dental characteristics, the position of their teeth, and the relationship between the upper and lower jaws.
Typically, dental x-rays (and restorations) have been used to identify individuals, but many young children don’t have any x-ray records. Your child also may not have any fingerprint records. What’s unique about the Toothprints Dental ID is that they also capture saliva, which can be a powerful tool for police dogs to scent-track. It also holds your child’s DNA, and sufficient proteins remain on the wafer to perform a proper DNA test to act as another means of identifying your child.
How Does the Process Work?
The process for obtaining your child’s toothprint ID is very simple. We start by soaking the thermoplastic wafer in a warm water bath, which softens it. We instruct your child to open their mouth wide and hold the wafer on their bottom teeth. Next, we have your child bite down on the wafer, and stay that way for 10 seconds. The wafer is left to cool for 2 to 3 minutes and then placed in a resealable plastic bag. We give you the Toothprints to take home for safe keeping.
Toothprints Dental ID is done three times during your child’s life (depending upon how old your child is when you decide to have your child’s toothprints taken). The first impression is taken around the age of 3, after all of your child’s baby teeth (20 in total) have erupted. The second impression is taken around the age of 7 or 8, or after your child’s upper and lower incisors, and their first permanent molars have come in. The final impression is made around the age of 12 or 13, or after all of your child’s permanent teeth, except the third molars (wisdom teeth), have come in.
While we hope you never have to experience your child getting lost, Toothprints Dental ID can provide you with peace of mind. For more information, and to schedule, your child’s appointment at our office, call Todd Rogers Dental today at (719) 357-4425!
