Gum Disease

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease or periodontitis, is a progressive disease that destroys your gums, your teeth, and your jawbone. It starts out silently. The plaque and bacteria that build up on your teeth irritate your sensitive gum tissue. The irritation leads to inflammation. Your gums become red and swollen and bleed when you brush or floss. These symptoms are often ignored.

As your gums swell, they pull away from your teeth, creating pockets. Bacteria and food particles fall below the gum line and are impossible to remove with your toothbrush and floss. The bacteria multiply rapidly and attack your gums, your periodontal ligaments (which hold your teeth in place) and your jawbone. Over time, your gums recede, your teeth become loose, and your jawbone weakens. Eventually, your teeth can even fall out. Bacteria can even enter your bloodstream and travel throughout your body, and contribute to the development of serious health issues like heart disease and diabetes.

Preventing Gum Disease

Taking steps to prevent gum disease is essential for the health of your gums, your teeth, your jawbone, and your health in general. There are a few things that you should be doing to keep your gums healthy:
•  At home oral care. According to the ADA, you should brush your teeth at least twice a day, and floss daily. Brushing should last at least two minutes per session. A soft bristled brush will help to avoid gum irritation. You should also take care with flossing, and avoid snapping the floss against your gums.
•  Avoiding certain habits. Habits like smoking (or the use of any tobacco products) and drinking significantly raises your risk of developing gum disease. They also greatly increase your risk of developing oral cancer.
•  Maintain a healthy diet. A healthy diet is good for your whole body, including your periodontal health. Dark leafy greens, fruits, vegetables, protein, legumes, and nuts not only provide your body (and your gums) with essential vitamins and minerals, they also help to reduce inflammation, and can reduce your risk of developing gum disease.
•  Regular dental visits. Visiting the office for regular cleanings and exams will help to keep your gums, and your teeth, in good condition. We provide thorough cleanings, removing plaque, bacteria and tartar buildup. Exams allow us to spot the earliest warning signs of gum disease, which then allows us to take action right away.

Treatment of Gum Disease

It is essential that you schedule an appointment as soon as you notice signs and symptoms of gum disease. Even if you think your bleeding gums are caused by aggressive brushing, it is best to have an exam to make sure. If gum disease is discovered, we can take action to prevent it from getting worse.

There are a few different treatments that can be performed to help restore the health of your gums. The treatment used depends on the severity of your condition. Earlier stages of gum disease can be treated with a scaling and root planing. If your gum disease is more advanced, you may require a more invasive, surgical procedure, such as pocket reduction surgery, gum flap surgery or grafting procedures (soft tissue and bone). With proper treatment, the health of your gums, and your mouth can be restored, and preventative measures can keep gum disease from returning.
