Halitosis (Bad Breath)
Colorado Springs, CO

Bad breath, also known as halitosis, is an issue that can cause even the most outgoing person to become self-conscious. When it comes to dealing with bad breath, many people think that gargling with mouthwash, breath mints, or chewing gum can solve the problem. These products, however, are not always effective, and only mask the problem. Bad breath isn’t always caused by specific foods (onions, garlic, tuna, etc.). It can actually be the result of a larger oral health issue. At Todd Rogers Dental, we can help you to determine the cause of your halitosis and provide you with effective treatment.

What Causes Halitosis?

Many people think that bad breath is simply caused by the foods you eat, such as onions and garlic. The truth is, however, that there are a variety of different causes, including:

•  Gum disease. Brushing and flossing every day is an important part of maintaining your oral health. When you ignore your oral hygiene routine, plaque and oral bacteria build up in your mouth, irritating your gum tissue. This causes pockets to form between your gums and teeth, where bacteria and lingering food particles can become trapped. It is impossible for your toothbrush to effectively clean out these periodontal pockets, which then leads to chronic bad breath.
•  Dry mouth. Saliva is not only important for digestion, it is also essential for washing away bacteria and lingering food particles in your mouth. When you have dry mouth, your body does not produce enough saliva, and your mouth becomes an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. Dry mouth can be due to natural causes, or it can be the result of certain types of medications.
•  Certain medical issues. Certain cancers and metabolic disorders, as well as certain infections (such as nasal infections), can lead to bad breath.
•  Smoking, or other tobacco products. Tobacco products have a very strong smell all on their own, which can linger in your mouth. Tobacco use can also contribute to gum disease

How is Halitosis Treated?

Bad breath is embarrassing, but it can be eliminated. There are several treatments available that can freshen your breath. Brushing at least twice a day, flossing daily, and attending dental visits for cleanings and exams at least twice a year are integral to eliminating plaque and oral bacteria and keeping gum disease at bay. Other ways to eliminate, and prevent, halitosis include:
•  Cleaning your tongue. The tongue is often forgotten in the oral hygiene regimen. A tongue cleaner can help to remove bacteria and other food particles from between the papillae on your tongue.
•  Properly caring for dentures. It is important to clean your dentures thoroughly every night, as well as your gum tissue.
•  Treating gum disease.
•  Look at your medications to find out if dry mouth is listed as a side effect.
•  Drink plenty of water.
•  Chewing gum can be helpful in stimulating saliva flow
•  Quit smoking.
•  If your halitosis is caused by a medical issue, you may require treatment from a physician.

If you are living with chronic halitosis, there is a help. Treating halitosis can not only freshen your breath but give you the boost of confidence you need to smile and be social. For more information, and to schedule, your appointment, call Todd Rogers Dental today at (719) 357-4425.
