Restorative Dental Implants
Colorado Springs, CO

Rendering of a dental implant from Todd Rogers Dental in Colorado Springs, CO.Accidents happen, and some may leave you with visible, lasting damage such as missing teeth. Not only do missing teeth reduce the overall functionality of your dental structure but are also quite unappealing to look at. They may also cause speech problems and make it harder to pronounce a few sounds.

At Todd Rogers Dental, we offer multiple restorative dentistry solutions to help replace missing teeth, including the traditional dentures, and bridges, and the newer dental implants. All effectively replace missing teeth, but dental implants area better options and come with a long list of benefits.

Benefits of Dental Implants

A dental implant is essentially a metal screw that your dentist embeds into your jaw as a replacement for the tooth’s root. The dentist will place an abutment over the screw and cover it all with a crown, effectively replacing the missing tooth.
•  Permanent solution – A denture too replaces missing teeth, but it is a removable fixture that can come lose if not fitted properly, whereas an implant is a permanent solution. You don’t have to worry about your implant falling off.
•  Cost-efficient- because it is a long term solution, an implant is a more cost-effective solution than a denture. If you lose or damage the denture, you will have to pay the additional replacement cost.
•  Comfortable – A denture can be quite uncomfortable if it isn’t’ secured with dental cement or appropriately fitted. An implant, however, is custom-made for you and fixed securely to mimic the positioning and functionality of your actual tooth. Thus, they are a lot more comfortable. In fact, it doesn’t feel like an artificial tooth at all.
•  Low-maintenance – You don’t have to follow a special implant care routine. Your implant works like your natural tooth and requires the exact same care process. Make sure your brush twice daily and floss regularly to maintain optimal health.

Dental Implant Procedure

The dental implant procedure is very simple and is divided into two parts. So keep in mind that you will need to come in for multiple visits, and the number of visits varies by patient, the number of implants, and other unforeseen circumstances and complications, if any.
•  the first step is to determine whether the bone is sturdy enough to hold the implant. The dentist does this via X-rays and oral examinations.
•  If found fit, the dentist will start the process by placing the implant in the bone. Once the implant is secure, the dentist will place a temporary cover over the area to allow the bone to fuse with the implant and integrate it into the structure securely.
•  Next, you wait as the bone heals. The process can take anywhere around six months to a year, depending upon the placement of the implant. The upper jaw usually takes longer to heal than the lower jaw.
•  Once the bone heals, the dentist will secure the abutment and the crown. The dentist may choose to place the abutment with the implant and let the two heal together, or you may have to undergo an extra surgical step where the dentist cuts open the gum to expose the implant and attach the abutment.
•  Once the gums heal and the abutment is secure, the dentist will place the crown and seal it all with dental cement.

As mentioned earlier, the process varies by patient. If your bone may need extra time to heal, the dentist may not place an abutment with the implant elongating the process. You will also have to go in for regular visits to see whether the bone is healing properly or not.
