One of the factors that give implants a certain appeal is their permanence, and this is because of a fancy term called osseointegration.

What is Osseointegration?

When it comes to dental implants, the surgical procedure introduces a foreign element to your jaw bone. This is a small titanium post, and the ultimate goal of the post is complete fusion with the surrounding bone. The fusion of the biocompatible foreign body with your bone is called osseointegration. This is the action that gives the implant its permanence and its incredible functionality. This piece is the root of your natural tooth but is longer and much stronger than natural bone and bone fusion.

Implant Osseointegration vs. Removables

Dentures and removable dental appliances are great for restoring some of your oral functions. They allow you to eat more (but your range is still limited), your speech is improved, and cosmetically, your smile is back to nearly perfect. However, they also cause bone loss, gum irritation, and must frequently be removed for cleaning. They are also highly susceptible to wear and tear over time and may need to be repaired or replaced. Dental implants are different. These are a permanent replacement option which means that you do not have to remove any part of them for cleaning. You can treat replacement teeth as your natural teeth. Should a replacement tooth have an issue, we can replace the tooth without needing to replace the implant.

Benefits of Osseointegration & Implants

The implant also gives you back a full range of food choices, which is a great step above dentures, especially when they can slip, slide, fall out, or break. Implants will not shift or fall out, as they are a part of your jaw now after the healing process. These are also a great option since they do not cause bone loss. Without the stimulation that natural tooth roots or implants provide, jaw bone begins to atrophy over time. This gives your face a sunken appearance and causes more problems over time. The implant stimulates jaw growth whenever you chew, meaning that you will not have the same worry you would with a removable option. They also will not irritate your gums or remaining teeth. You will forget you even have one since they are so incredibly comfortable.
