Who Needs Fluoride Treatments?
Posted on 9/21/2020 by Dr. Todd Rogers
Who Needs Fluoride Treatments?Fluoride is a mineral which occurs naturally in drinking water. So, everyone does have a fluoride intake of some sort. This mineral helps to strengthen your teeth, preventing decay and injuries. However, not everyone gets the amount of fluoride needed to keep themselves healthy. Both children and adults should have fluoride intake to maintain dental health. The need for fluoride treatment arises when you do not get the recommended amount of fluoride in your regular diet. Our dental office can provide fluoride treatment for all of our patients.

Children

Children and young adults are the most common recipients of professional fluoride treatments. The recommended daily fluoride consumption is 0.1 to 1.5 milligrams (mg) for infants up to four years old, 1 to 2.5 mg for children ages four to six, and 1.5 to 2.5 mg for children ages seven to ten. Fluoride toothpaste is recommended for young children to help them get their recommended daily intake. This, along with fluoride supplements, can ensure that they have the right amount of fluoride in their system. However, if they are deficient in fluoride intake, our dentist will recommend a fluoride treatment. This may include topically applied fluoride or a prescription strength fluoride supplement.

Adults

Adolescents and adults receive fewer fluoride treatments than children, but this does not mean that they are not needed. This age group still needs daily fluoride intake in order to protect the teeth from cavities and other conditions. Daily fluoride consumption at this age should be between 1.5 and 4 mg. You will need a professional fluoride treatment if you do not consume this amount on a daily basis. Fluoride deficiency is often diagnosed based on tooth decay and other damages. In this case, our dentist will likely recommend fluoride treatment.

This treatment for adolescents and adults is the same as that received by children. For more information about fluoride and available treatment, contact us today.
