How to Respond if Someone Knocks Out a Tooth

Posted on 12/15/2019 by Dr. Todd Rogers
How to Respond if Someone Knocks Out a ToothAccidents can happen at any time. During these accidents, your teeth may be knocked out for one reason or the other. It is estimated that about 5 million teeth get knocked out annually. This happens to people of all ages, including children and adults.

However, when these accidents happen and you see your teeth on the floor, it doesn't necessarily mean it's the end. The tooth can still be salvaged and replanted. This will allow it to still be usable for years to come. However, for that to happen, you must take action to help us help you when you come to our offices.

Call Us Immediately

The first thing you should do in such a case is call us as soon as it happens. If it's a major accident, you might want to call 911 first, and then get in touch with us. When you do this, you alert us that someone needing immediate attention is on the way so that we can make the necessary preparations to help you.

Pick the Tooth

If the tooth is already out of your mouth, you should pick it up immediately. While doing this, you should ensure that you don't come into contact with the root of the tooth. Make sure you only touch the crown. Once you've done this, you should rinse off the tooth with some water. It's also important that you don't dry or scrub the tooth. This also means that a tissue or cloth in this scenario is a big no.

Place The Tooth Back In Its Socket

If it's possible, try and place the tooth back in the socket it came from. You can do this by pushing it using your fingers and also using the tongue to position it correctly. While it's there, always make sure the tooth stays moist so that the root surface cells can remain alive.

After that is done, ensure that you come and see us immediately. The sooner you come in, the more likely we are to be able to reattach the tooth. It's highly recommended that you see us within 30 minutes of the injury for the best outcome.
