Tips for Caring for Your Teeth When Pregnant

Tips for Caring for Your Teeth When PregnantThere are many additional responsibilities you must take on while you're pregnant. One of them has to do with the way that you take care of your teeth.

How to Maintain a Healthy Smile While You're Pregnant

Maintaining a healthy mouth while you're pregnant really isn't any different than doing so when you aren't pregnant. You'll want to brush your teeth for two minutes twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush, using fluoride toothpaste.

Make sure you also floss between your teeth and your gums so that you don't miss any food particles. You should also consider rinsing your mouth with an antimicrobial mouth rinse to control any plaque that's in your mouth. All these products should contain the ADA (American Dental Association) logo on them so you know they're safe for both you and your baby.

Dental Tips Specifically for Pregnant Women

Your doctor isn't the only one who will stress the importance of eating a balanced diet and only snacking in moderation – we will too. One thing that he may not tell you that we think is important for you to know is that when you vomit from morning sickness, you should immediately rinse your mouth with a teaspoon of baking soda mixed in water. Doing so will stop your stomach acid from attacking your teeth.

Visiting Our Dental Office While You're Pregnant

Routine dental visits are typically considered “safe” while you're pregnant. It's important to know that the benefits of visiting our dental office during your pregnancy will far outweigh any risks. When you're pregnant, you'll want to tell us about any changes that you notice in your mouth though. This will include things like redness, swelling, or bleeding.

Make sure you also inform us of how far along in your pregnancy you are. You should also tell us if you're considered to have a “high-risk” pregnancy or if there are medical concerns involved.

Sometimes this will require us to postpone any dental treatment. This is something we can easily discuss with us when you call so make sure you call our office and set up an appointment soon.
