After Dental Implant Surgery

An implant placed in the mouth. The majority of our patients do not experience much discomfort or swelling following dental implant surgery. This is because we are very careful with our surgical techniques, appropriate medications, and the patient's willingness to adhere to our at-home instructions. Please do not touch or disturb the implant site. If you are experiencing discomfort and swelling, these suggestions will help:
•

Rinsing:

The day of surgery, please do not rinse or spit.
•

Bleeding:

For the first 24 hours you will have some bleeding or redness or pinkness in your saliva. This is normal. If you are experiencing some bright red blood and it is pooling in your mouth, biting on a cool, wet washcloth placed directly on the implant site for 30 minutes will help. If bleeding is persistent, please call our office (719-528-6450) for assistance.
•

Swelling:

Don't be alarmed! This is a normal occurrence after surgery. Apply an ice pack for the first 36 hours to minimize the swelling. Do not go to sleep with the ice pack on!
•

Diet:

Probably the most important thing you can do to assist normal healing is drink plenty of fluids, avoiding hot liquids. During the first several weeks of heeling, eat only soft foods.
•

Medications:

Take the medications given exactly as directed.
•

Oral Hygiene:

Please do not underestimate the importance of good oral hygiene for a fast recovery and long-lasting results with the dental implant.
•

Restrictions:

For the first 24 hours after surgery, please do not participate in any physical activity that will significantly raise your blood pressure and heart rate. Depending on your occupation, please discuss with Dr. Rogers when you can return to work.
