Cracked Teeth Can Lead to Much Bigger Problems if Left UntreatedSome people believe that a cracked tooth is merely a cosmetic concern. Unfortunately, that is a dangerous mindset, as failure to treat a cracked tooth could lead to much bigger problems. These are the most worrisome.

Tooth Decay

One of the leading problems with a cracked tooth is tooth decay. A crack gives bacteria an entryway into your tooth, where it can feed on sugars and create acids to further damage the tooth. Ultimately, this can lead to decay, especially because it is hard to clean out these cracks with a toothbrush. You could find yourself with a major cavity.

Abscess

An abscessed tooth may form as a result of a bacterial infection after bacteria enter into the tooth via a crack. It involves a pocket of pus, and symptoms include pain, especially pain that worsens when lying down, facial swelling, a foul taste in the mouth, fever, and bad breath. Treatment of an abscess may include draining the pocket, root canal therapy, antibiotics, and even tooth extraction.

Infection and Sepsis

A dental infection can be caused by a broken tooth that causes an infection inside of the pulp. The pulp is the portion of the tooth that contains connective tissue, blood vessels, and nerves. Signs of an oral infection include bad breath, pain, sensitivity, fever, and swelling in the neck and jaw. When infection results, bacteria can move from the tooth into the tissue and bone below, and in severe cases, this can lead to sepsis.

Sepsis is the body's response to infection, and it can sometimes be deadly. Sepsis can result from an infection in any part of the body, and it requires immediate treatment.
