Oral Health Benefits of Eating Eggs

Posted on 7/20/2018 by Dr. Todd Rogers
Oral Health Benefits of Eating EggsEggs have gotten a bad reputation among the general public for being unhealthy and full of cholesterol.

When consumed in moderation, eggs can actually be beneficial. This is even true when it comes to your oral health, so consider your options wisely the next time you wonder what to have for breakfast.

Protect the Enamel

Did you know that eggs are a good source of vitamin D? They are, and this can help to protect your teeth and keep them strong. Calcium is needed to strengthen the teeth, and in order to absorb calcium into the body, vitamin D is a necessity. Sunlight is another excellent source of vitamin D, but eggs and other healthy dietary items are safer than prolonged sun exposure.

Selenium

Eggs also contain selenium, which is helpful for good oral health. Selenium is beneficial in curing oral ulcers and mucositis. It offers an anti-proliferative effect, and it has also been connected to the preventions of oral lesions and conditions.

A Good Source of Protein

Eggs are a great sense of protein, which is beneficial to the teeth. Protein is needed to create a healthy tooth structure, and it is necessary for connective and mucosal tissue development. Without protein, the health of your teeth could be greatly compromised.

Vitamin B2

Vitamin B2, otherwise known as riboflavin, is also important for your oral health. Without this important vitamin, you could develop mouth sores. Eggs are a good source of vitamin B2, but chicken, red meat, pork, and dairy products are also options.

A good diet is an important part of your oral health, and eggs should be included. When considering your oral healthcare needs, don't forget to make regular appointments with your dentist.
